Chapter 23

Spencersville Flats, New York

Eleven days after America went dark

Lucas had no idea what to think as he approached downtown Spencersville Flats, but whatever he was expecting, the reality was a good deal different. The town looked as though it had been scooped up from the late nineteenth century and dropped crashing into modern day, the buildings, old worn pavement, shabby looking streetlights and a distinct lack of vehicles on the road making Lucas think back to a time before such modern conveniences existed.

The walk toward downtown had been long, but uneventful, and Lucas had passed several homes and farms on his ten-mile trek toward the center of the village, which was really what it was.

He’d passed the Bristol’s farm first, lingering slightly as he walked by, looking toward the structure, as if he could sense the evil and death that lurked within the old farmhouse and surprisingly modern looking post and beam barn. A modern looking pick-up truck sat in the driveway, surrounded by overgrown grass and what seemed to be an animal pen, though there were no animals inside of it.

A stray cat had wandered out of the long grass, mewing quietly as it approached, rubbing gently along Lucas’s jeans as he continued toward town. He’d stopped for a moment, bending low to pet its head, then continued on, cinching up the straps of his Go Bag on his shoulder.

As he’d gotten closer to town, the houses had appeared more frequently on each side of the road, though they remained as old as the previous farmhouses, looking mostly like late 1800’s and early 1900’s construction. A hundred years ago they had likely looked stoic and gorgeous, but now, after decades of ill attention, the paint was worn, shutters were broken, some had missing shingles, and all in all, the travel toward town gave him a looming sense of depression. Spencersville Flats seemed to be a town on the downward slope, caught in the muck of the past while other areas around it adapted to modern day, leaving the place behind.

He couldn’t help but notice that in none of the farms he passed did he see some of the more familiar modern farm equipment that was necessary to meet the needs of the ever-growing agricultural landscape in the twenty-first century. Whatever revenue that industry had been earning was now trickling instead of flooding, and most certainly played a role in the apparent downswing of the town.

Suddenly, Lucas found it difficult to blame the Fitzgerald children for leaving. What was there for them here? Just— living out their long lives on the family farm?

Not everyone was built for that sort of life, especially not people born in the last twenty years. Ahead of him, the town began to come together, a series of small, old buildings appearing like some strange oasis in the desert, and as he approached, he also saw a few scattered men sitting on horseback outside some of the small shops lining the downtown streets.
